A customs union allows free movement of goods without having to pay customs duties. If we leave the Customs Union all our exports will have to be checked and have to pay customs duties.
This is going to make it much more difficult to export goods to the EU.
We already trade with most of the world through trade deals that have been negotiated by the EU. If we leave the EU these deals will no longer apply. The UK can start to negotiate trade deals with the the rest of the world on our own, but it will take time and we will not be in a strong position.
There has to be some way to stop this self inflicted damage. We are a Parliamentary Democracy and Parliament should not allow this to proceed. It is up to our elected MPs to make it clear to the Prime Minister that the damage to jobs, livelihood and welfare is so serious that we cannot support leaving the customs union.Leave a comment
